Beer Brewing

A Brief History of Brewing
The beer brewing process has been a part of civilization for thousands of years. The first recorded documentation of beer brewing dates back nearly 7000 years to the Sumerian culture of Mesopotamia. There is no official record of the discovery of the fermentation process, whether it was a matter of invention, or a complete accident. However, we do know that even in these ancient times beer was a part of everyday life.

The beer brewing tradition carried on through the Greek and Roman empires, and really took root in the monasteries of the Middle Ages. Here the art form used for the first time in large-scale production and distribution. Consumption of beer began to grow in popularity, and the secular aristocracy took on the art of beer brewing. In essence, the rest is history.

Technological improvements have made beer brewing a more perfected science. We now take for granted the purity as well as the availability of quality beer. Still, it is to the predecessors of modern brewing that we owe a great deal of thanks.

Beer Brewing Today
The advent of refrigeration, combined with the discovery of pasteurization, has made large-scale beer-brewing a possibility for modern society. In the United States alone, beer sales are over 200 million (31 gallon) barrels of beer each year. The beer industry is a large, highly lucrative area of commerce. And to think, what humble beginnings for the beer making process!

In recent years, many beer enthusiasts have turned back to the roots of beer production, with the newfound popularity of home beer brewing equipment. While brewing remains primarily a commercial activity, many are realizing the enjoyment of personally crafting homemade beer.

With basic brewing equipment, the basic ingredients, and a large pot found in the average kitchen, you can brew your own beer. Using the single-step beer brewing method, beginners to home beer making can create a personal brew in around a week.
