Hops should be available for shipping early April 2009. The hop plant (Humulus lupulus) is a perennial that produces climbing annual vines from a perennial crown and rootstock. The stems or vines may grow 25 feet in a single season but will die back to the crown each fall. In addition to the true roots and aerial stems, the crown also produces underground rhizomes. Rhizomes possess numerous buds and are used for propagation in order to maintain the genetically identical traits of the mother plant.
Hops are native to many parts of the world and different varieties have been found growing anywhere from desert locations to 7000 ft. elevations. Your ability to grow hops is usually not limited by your location on earth. The health of the vine is more dependent on the grower's ability to provide proper growing conditions and care. Under good conditions, hops are a prolific vine and will be a joy to grow and utilize. Vigorous varieties will produce as much as 2 lbs. of dried flowers per plant. When grown next to a house or greenhouse, the vine provides a nice seasonal shade against summer sun.
As the female flower matures, it forms a cone-like structure. The mature hop cones are 1 to 3 inches long, yellowish green and papery to the touch. The cones are generally harvested in August and September, dried and then used for whatever brewing or ornamental purpose you desire.
With each rhizome order we include detailed growing instructions. Remember, upon obtaining the rhizomes, they should be stored in a plastic bag, slightly moistened, and kept in a refrigerator until you are ready to plant them. There is an $9.95 shipping/handling charge applied per Rhizome Order. Your total shipping charge will be adjusted when your order is processed to reflect the $9.95 Priority Mail shipping fee. (we will adjust the amount if needed at time of shipping). Due to agricultural regulations we can not ship this item to WA,OR,CA and ID. Thank you for your understanding. Seasonal Item. Orders accepted January thru March. ***Rhizome viability is not guaranteed, and we cannot replace them if they do not grow; or are destroyed by bugs, animals, or weather conditions. They are available for a short time only, and WE MAKE EVERY EFFORT to ship you live, healthy roots.*** 2009 SEASON SOLD OUT! Hop Planting Information. *****2009 SEASON SOLD OUT!*****
