What is a "SMaSH" beer recipe?
"SMaSH" stands for "single malt and single hop." The acronym alludes to the simplistic listing of ingredients in a beer recipe, where only one type of malt and one type of hop are used.
There are many benefits to brewing a SMaSH beer recipe. With having a limited amount of ingredients, you can test your sensory skills to see how a specific hop or malt comes through in a recipe. By building an understanding of what to expect when using certain ingredients, you can make more informed decisions on what ingredients to incorporate in future recipes with more than one malt and/or hop.
