Making a Wine Yeast Starter

Yeast Starter Instructions for Winemaking

Create the Yeast Starter at least 24 hours before crushing grapes.  This recipe is sufficient for 10 gallons. Adjust according to your yield. 

Items required:

Orange Juice                          Water                        Table Sugar

Yeast (based on grape)        Yeast Nutrient         One gallon or 1/2 gallon glass jug

Stopper                                   Cylinder Lock

 

Boil 1 cup of orange juice and 3 cups of water. 

  • Cool the mixture.  Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of yeast nutrient. 
  • Place the starter into a clean glass gallon or ½ gallon container that can accept a fermentation lock.  Add yeast and and attach a fermentation lock.  Keep in a warm (70-80 degree) location for 1-2 days.  Add entire amount to must.
